During the 2017 season, the Miami Dolphins traded away one of their best players, running back Jay Ajayi. Ajayi was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fourth round pick. Ajayi was Miami’s lead back running for 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns. When Ajayi was shipped to Philadelphia, Kenyan Drake emerged onto the scene as Miami’s lead back. Drake responded to the promotion with three alright 100 total yard games since becoming starter. Drake showed he has the skill set to be a good back in the NFL, but Miami needs to find his counterpart.

Damien Williams is an option to be brought back, if for the right price. Gas has publicly spoken praise about Williams. Williams missed the last month of the season with a shoulder injury, and watched as Kenyan Drake took the starting role and ran with it. Williams is a back Head Coach Adam Gase loves, he has power, speed and can catch ball out of backfield. If price is right look for Miami to possibly bring Williams back.

Free agent running backs include the Patriots’ Dion Lewis, 49ers’ Carlos Hyde, Bengals’ Jeremy Hill, Seahawks’ Thomas Rawls, and Cardinals Kerwynn Williams.

Dion Lewis would be a nice piece in Adam Gase’s offense. Lewis has speed, can catch the ball out of the backfield, 32 receptions, 3 Touchdowns. Lewis can also run the ball between the tackles, 180 carries, 896 yards, 6 touchdowns. Taking a piece from your division rival makes it even more intriguing.

Thomas Rawls is similar to Lewis. Rawls is a speedy, smaller back but with some injury concerns. Missing half of the 2016 season, Rawls only tallied only 157 on carries. Rawls was passed on the depth chart by Chris Carson, Eddie Lacy, J.D. McKissic and Mike Davis. With right opportunity Rawls can bounce back to 2015 form where he rushed for 830 yards on 147 carries.

Carlos Hyde could be a more expensive option but he has talent to match the price. Hyde had a rough start to his career but finally started to get a grip in these last two seasons. Hyde rushed for over 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns the last two seasons.

Miami can also look into the draft for a new compliment back. Top rated running back prospect will more than likely not be there at 11. Other options include Georgia’s Sony Michel, Stanford’s Bryce Love,   Auburns Kerryon Johnson, and USC’s Ronald Jones II. There are plenty other talented running back prospects Miami could look at, these are the top tier guys.

Sony Michel had the game of his life in the Rose Bowl against Oklahoma. Michel had 11 carries, he turned those carries into 181 yards and three touchdowns. Michel also added 4 catches, for 41 yards and another touchdown. On the season Michel had 1,227 yards on 156 carries, and 16 touchdowns. Michel is a shifty runner who can also run between the tackles, a lot like current running back Kenyan Drake.

Much like Michel, Bryce Love didn’t get many opportunities to catch the ball out of the backfield but, he ran wild when he did touch the ball. Love ran for 2,118 yards on 263 carries. That’s an 8.1 YPC. He also added 19 touchdowns.

Whether Miami looks to Damien Williams, free agency or the draft is anyones guess, but look for their to be another running back added to the mix in 2018.
