Matt Patricia is less than 24 hours removed from a Super Bowl 52 loss, but the former New England Patriots defensive coordinator has plenty to celebrate as the Detroit Lions officially named him their next head coach.

“When we launched the search for our next head coach, I wanted to find a leader that could take us to the next level and I am confident we have found that in Matt Patricia,” Lions general manager Bob Quinn said.
“He has been preparing for this opportunity his entire career, and he’s ready for the responsibility and its challenges.

“Matt is driven to succeed, has extreme passion for the game and excels in preparation. He embodies the same hard-working, blue-collar attributes that represent our organization and the great City of Detroit.”

This will mark the first head coaching tenure for Patricia, who spent the last 6 seasons in New England as defensive coordinator, a total of 14 years with the Patriots organization, a part of 6 Super Bowl championship teams.
