The Panthers former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, has just been named head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals officially made him head coach on Monday.
Steve Wilks was promoted to defensive coordinator last year after Sean McDermott left for a head coaching job in Buffalo.
Wilks spent six years with the Panthers, five of those as the secondary coach and last year as the defensive coordinator. He was also the assistant head coach.
Rivera left Wilks in charge during training camp in 2015 after he had to leave for four days because of his brother’s death.
Al Holcomb the Panther’s linebacker coach is expected to go to Arizona with Wilks and be the defensive coordinator.
Wilks has an aggressive blitz-heavy defense that could fit very well with the personnel they have in Arizona.
The Wilks led defense led the league all the way through week 10. The Panthers defense finished 7th in total defense (317.1 ypg) and 11th scoring points per game. (20.4)
Ron Rivera and his staff had been planning as if Wilks would get a head coaching gig. Eric Washington, the defensive line coach will be promoted to defensive coordinator.
Washington is regarded as one of the best defensive lineman coaches in the NFL.
Washington has been a key part in the development of player’s Kawann Short, Star Lotulelei, Mario Addison and Wes Horton.
Washington stresses physicality, pad level and hand placement which has produced some of the best defensive lines in football over the past few years.

The Panthers success on the defensive side of the ball should continue with the new Eric Washington- led defense.
