The Cincinnati Bengals are working towards making Teryl Austin, who has been interviewed for the Detroit Lions head coaching gig,  their next defensive coordinator.

It seems a bit surprising to see Austin making a lateral move in terms of job title, as he was the defensive coordinator in Detroit for the past four seasons.

While Austin has not been eliminated from the running for the Lions head coaching job, it is believed that New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is the front-runner and if/when he is hired Austin will leave the organization, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

Interestingly, the Lions blocked Austin from interviewing with the Green Bay Packers for their defensive coordinator gig. You have to love division rivalries.

Cincinnati is trying to get a start on replacing Paul Guenther, who is joining Jon Gruden’s staff in Oakland, and have looked at Bears DC Vic Fangio as well.
