Giants Hire James Bettcher As Defensive Coordinator

The New York Giants haven’t officially hired a new head coach, but they have a new defensive coordinator.

The Giants have hired Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher as their new defensive coordinator, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

Bettcher also had an offer on the table to become the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans but turned it down.

Bettcher’s work with the Cardinals was impressive last season as Arizona allowed the sixth fewest yards in the league to opposing teams and had the fourth-best in DVOA in the league.

With Bettcher’s hire,  Steve Spagnuolo is on his way out.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim Says Josh Rosen to Play When Time is Right

The Arizona Cardinals are continuing to be patient in regards to the readiness of rookie signal caller Josh Rosen, and despite starting the season 0-2, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim says that the team will stay the course.

“Some guys have played too early and it has crippled their career,” Keim said, during an appearance on Arizona Sports 98.7 (h/t Darren Urban of Cardinals.com). “I’m not going to name names, but I think a lot of us can think of certain players. Then there are guys who have come in and had success right away. But usually it’s a rocky road.”

Arizona’s offense has sputtered, ranking last in yards per game, passing yards per game, and yards per attempt, prompting many fans to call for Rosen to replace Sam Bradford as the team’s starting quarterback.

With Bradford manning the offense, the Cardinals have scored 6 points.

Cardinals Sign David Johnson to Contract Extension

The Arizona Cardinals have signed running back David Johnson to a three-year, $39 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Johnson’s new deal could be worth “up to” $45 million, and $30 million guaranteed will be due at signing, with incentives and will keep Johnson in Arizona through the 2021 season.

Cardinals Release Scooby Wright

The Arizona Cardinals have released veteran linebacker Scooby Wright, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

Wright, 23, will be subject to waivers since he has less than four years of NFL experience, creating the possibility that another team could put in a claim for him prior to him hitting the open free agent market.

Wright was promoted from the practice squad last season and only registered one tackle while being on the Cardinals’ roster for ten games.
