The New York Jets will be without starting quarterback Josh McCown for the rest of the season with a fractured left hand, the team announced on Monday.

McCown, 38, received a second opinion Monday and with additional test it was confirmed that surgery was needed.

“It’s big for him and it’s big for us because he’s been leading us all year, offensively,” said Jets coach Todd Bowles said regarding McCown.

“For him to go down this late in the season … it’s the next-man-up mentality. The next guy has to step up.”

McCown was injured on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

I knew when it happened something wasn’t right,” McCown said after the game.
