The Oakland Raiders are getting closer to bringing rookie Obi Melifonwu back to the field this season.

Oakland originally placed Obi Melifonwu on injured reserve to start the season, hoping that they could utilize him later in the year.

The second-round safety has been designated to return from IR two weeks from now, according to Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area.

After an impressive run at UConn, Melifonwu impressed Raiders’ scouts and the team took him with the 56th overall pick in this year’s draft.

Melifonwu is expected to cover tight ends and running backs in sub packages as the team develops him into, what they hope, a starter on defense.
