Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Stephen Paea informed his coaches on Wednesday that he is retiring, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter.

Paea was the Cowboys’ starter at right defensive tackle through the first four games of the season but missed Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers  with a knee issue and had been listed as questionable for Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Paea became a valuable piece of the Cowboy’s defense. He was signed to replace Terrell McClain and became more valuable when Cedric Thornton was released in September.
