Los Angeles Chargers’ quarterback Phillip Rivers is still as important to the team as ever and head coach Anthony Lynn is taking steps to make sure he keeps his franchise cornerstone healthy.

Rivers, 35, was given a second rest day on Monday following the team’s joint scrimmage with the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.

Chargers’ tight end Antonio Gates was absent for a 3rd day of practice after attending the Hall of Fame induction of LaDanian Tomlinson.

“I like to get those veteran guys through those [cruel] days of training camp, and then sort of work them back into it,” Lynn said per ESPN.

And what if Rivers is opposed to sitting out?

“He didn’t have a choice” Lynn said
